Born in Miami Beach, Florida, USA, on June 15th, 1967, to Cuban immigrant parents. My lifelong relationship with art began as a child while trying to communicate with my father Ernesto Diaz Rodriquez, who served a 22-year prison sentence as a political prisoner in Cuba, from 1968 to 1991. My earliest memory was of our mother reading the letters he wrote to us before bedtime. Accompanying his letters was always an illustration or drawing. Intrigued and inspired by the colorful characters and subject matters, I began to draw as a way of connecting with him. This was my first introduction to art
Growing up under unusual circumstances defined my identity. Creating became an outlet then it became an obsession. Living in a two-bedroom house in Allapatta, a lower income district of Miami, further ignited the need to be unique. As an extremely shy middle child in a family of over achievers, I created my own world in order to deal with the chaos of everyday activities. A universe created and controlled by an insatiable appetite to push the boundaries of the known and unknown. This is where I strive to become complete, not molded by opinions or pressures from an ever-changing society. This is my sanctuary and I invite you to step inside and explore the World of Dz Diaz.
